Usually the cause of vitamin deficiency is related to diet. For Vitamin D, too little sunlight plays a major role in deficiency. Additionally the cause of a vitamin deficiency can also be due to an illness, alcoholism or the use of certain medication.

A vitamin deficiency can lead to various unpleasant symptoms. If you have a long-term vitamin deficiency, various conditions can arise, including anaemia and osteoporosis. Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency occurs in about 10 to 15 percent of the Dutch population. This number is much higher for vitamin D. In the winter period, 59 percent of the population or more is deficient in vitamin D. In the summer period, this value falls to 35 percent (Boonman- de Winter et al., 2015).
