HIV Test

This HIV test is a laboratory test and not a rapid test. Because it tests for both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, an infection can be detected earlier than with many rapid HIV tests. This reduces the chance of a false negative result in the early stages.

Homed-IQ test kits do not have customer names or information on them for privacy reasons. This means in order to link your test to your account, you must activate the test using the unique 12-digit test code before mailing it to the lab. The laboratory cannot process your test results or send them to you unless your test is activated.

The incubation period is sometimes confused with the window period. The incubation period is the time between when an individual is exposed to an infection and when they begin showing symptoms. This is different from the window period, which is the time between when an individual is exposed to an infection and when a test can reliably detect the infection. It is important to consider the window period for each STI when getting tested in order to guarantee the most reliable test results.

An early (acute) HIV infection may cause a brief flu-like illness or no symptoms at all. Therefore, it is possible to test for HIV without symptoms, as long as the window phase has passed.

In the Netherlands, it is possible to get tested for free at the GGD (Municipal Health Service) if you are under 25 or if you are in a risk group. Those over the age of 25 or who are not in a risk group can get tested by their GP or with a home test such as the one from Homed-IQ. Although a home STI self-test is an alternative way to perform a laboratory test, it does not replace the advice of a doctor. Homed-IQ cannot perform physical examinations, prescribe treatments (except for chlamydia treatment for Dutch residents) or provide follow-up STI care. If you test positive for an STI with a Homed-IQ test, take your test result to your GP for further advice and follow-up.

No, health insurance does not yet cover Homed-IQ tests. In the Netherlands, HIV testing is free if you are in a risk group according to the Municipal Health Service (GGD). The costs for HIV testing at your general practitioner are deducted from your excess. Coverage of the costs after that depends on your health insurance. Ask your health insurer what exactly is covered.

The HIV test is not suitable for young people under the age of 18. If you are under 18 and want to be tested for HIV, please contact the GGD in your municipality or your GP. It is also advised not to take this test during the window phase for HIV.

This HIV test is suitable if you want to test specifically for HIV after a possible risk, such as unprotected sex, a needle stick injury or contact with blood. Even if you have no symptoms, testing can be useful, because HIV can be present for a long time without any obvious symptoms.

• Practice safe sex: HIV is often transmitted through sex. By practicing safe sex, you reduce your risk of HIV. Safe sex means using condoms or dental dams properly every time you have sex, including oral sex.
• Get tested for STIs regularly: The risk of HIV is higher if you have another STI. Get tested for STIs regularly to ensure no infection goes unnoticed.
• Use PrEP or PEP: PrEP and PEP are HIV inhibitors. This means that they stop HIV from infecting the body. PrEP can be used before sex to prevent a potential HIV infection. PEP can be used after a potential HIV exposure to help block the virus from infecting the body.
• Never share needles/syringes: Sharing needles is a high-risk activity that can transmit HIV. If you use injection drugs, always use a clean needle and never share your injection equipment with others.

Your test results come with an explanation of the results as well as a downloadable laboratory report. This report can be taken to a GP for further testing, treatment, and guidance. If your result is negative and the window period has passed, none of the STIs included in this test were detected. If you develop symptoms later, or have unprotected sex again, it is sensible to test again.

After analysis, all samples are destroyed in accordance with medical guidelines. The laboratory uses only your unique test code and no personal data. This ensures that your privacy remains protected even after the test has been completed.

In rare cases, a sample cannot be properly analysed, for example if the collection was insufficient. In that case, Homed-IQ will contact you and provide instructions for a new sample collection.
