About the HIV Test

What is the HIV Test?

Homed-IQ’s HIV Test is a fourth generation laboratory test for HIV, detecting both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen. When your body is first infected with HIV and has not had time to create antibodies to the virus, the blood has a high level of p24. Testing for both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen enables earlier detection of HIV infections.

How does the HIV Test work?

This is a finger prick blood test that requires a few drops of blood. You will receive detailed instructions with your test so that you can easily take your sample from home. After your sample is collected, mail the test kit to our certified laboratory with the enclosed prepaid shipping materials. You will receive the test results within a few days.

When can you test for HIV?

The window period is the time between when you were infected with an STI and when it is detectable with a test. Every STI has its own window period. If you test for an STI before the window period has passed, you may test negative even if you are infected. See below for more information about the specific window period per STI and determine when you can reliably administer this test.

What is the window period for HIV?

HIV: 4 weeks to 3 months. If the result is negative, then only reliably 3 months after sexual contact.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the HIV Test

What is the difference between this HIV test and a rapid HIV test?

This HIV test is a laboratory test and not a rapid test. Because it tests for both HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen, an infection can be detected earlier than with many rapid HIV tests. This reduces the chance of a false negative result in the early stages.

Why do I need to activate my test kit?

Homed-IQ test kits do not have customer names or information on them for privacy reasons. This means in order to link your test to your account, you must activate the test using the unique 12-digit test code before mailing it to the lab. The laboratory cannot process your test results or send them to you unless your test is activated.

What is the difference between incubation period and window period?

The incubation period is sometimes confused with the window period. The incubation period is the time between when an individual is exposed to an infection and when they begin showing symptoms. This is different from the window period, which is the time between when an individual is exposed to an infection and when a test can reliably detect the infection. It is important to consider the window period for each STI when getting tested in order to guarantee the most reliable test results.

Can you use an HIV Test before you have symptoms?

An early (acute) HIV infection may cause a brief flu-like illness or no symptoms at all. Therefore, it is possible to test for HIV without symptoms, as long as the window phase has passed.

Is this HIV home test an alternative to a test carried out by a doctor?

In the Netherlands, it is possible to get tested for free at the GGD (Municipal Health Service) if you are under 25 or if you are in a risk group. Those over the age of 25 or who are not in a risk group can get tested by their GP or with a home test such as the one from Homed-IQ. Although a home STI self-test is an alternative way to perform a laboratory test, it does not replace the advice of a doctor. Homed-IQ cannot perform physical examinations, prescribe treatments (except for chlamydia treatment for Dutch residents) or provide follow-up STI care. If you test positive for an STI with a Homed-IQ test, take your test result to your GP for further advice and follow-up.
