Testosterone Test

Testosterone is a hormone that has several important functions in both men and women. In men, testosterone regulates bone mass, sex drive, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm. In women, testosterone affects bone mass, sex drive, and mood. 

A total testosterone test measures the total amount of testosterone available in the bloodstream. This includes free, unbound testosterone and testosterone that is attached to proteins. This is the most common type of testosterone test.

Testosterone follows a circadian rhythm. Levels are highest in the early morning and decrease throughout the day. Testing before 10:00 a.m. ensures that the result is more comparable to medical reference values.

This test is less suitable in cases of acute illness, recent surgery, or severe sleep deprivation, as these factors may temporarily affect testosterone levels. If you are using hormone medication or are under specialist care, please consult your doctor before taking the test.

In men, low testosterone is usually treated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). TRT can come in the form of pills, gels, patches, or injections. The effects of TRT in women are less well studied, as women require much lower quantities of testosterone than men. In women, low testosterone can lead to fatigue, depression or anxiety, decreased sex drive, infertility, thinning hair, vaginal dryness, lowered muscle mass, and osteoporosis.
